Bird racing at VergenoegenBird racing is a popular sport among bird owners in Vergenoegen. Many men and older boys are seriously involved in birding in the village and some of the more popular birds to keep are Bastards, Zips and Towa Towas. Chung, who lives on Old Road is a long time maker of bird cages similar to the ones seen in the photo above. Bird seed bush is harvested from the backdams where birds are also trapped, mostly using gum with caged birds as lure. Once trapped the birds are caged and trained to whistle melodiously for lengthy periods. During races the birds which whistle first, longest and most melodiously score points and are adjudged winners. The owners of the winning birds usually take the pool of money which is put up by the various competing bird owners. Races usually take place on early Sunday morning. In the early mornings and afternoons many men and boys can be seen ‘walking out’ their birds.
